Teams may give one contract extension per season to a player with at least one year remaining on their contract. If a player is a pending UFA then they may not be resigned and must go to FA. The extension may add up to 3 years onto the contract, at an increase of 150% of the player's highest paid year. A player may never exceed 6 years in contract length from the time the contract is signed, until the conclusion of the extension.
For example Tom Brady is set to become an UFA in 2023. Prior to the new extension deadline, Brady can be given an extension for up to three years. If his cap hit was $7,000,000 the cap hit for his extended years would be $10,5000,000. $7,000,000 x 150% = $10,500,000.
The deadline to use your contract extension will be announced at a later date. It will come during the off-season, once all vacated teams have been replaced.
